gilda lyons
was raised in a family of painters and sculptors. Creatively, her first language was visual. Consequently, all her formal training had been as a visual artist when she began her undergraduate studies at Bard College. There, she focused intensely on studio work in painting, drawing, printmaking and installation art while gradually incorporating elements of vocal performance, as well as acoustic and electronic music composition (Representative interdisciplinary works from this period include What You Want (Substance Free) and Shhh..., premiered at the Procter Art Center as part of a festival of Fluxus happenings). Today, Gilda Lyons continues her work in the visual arts, focusing largely on installation pieces that layer natural elements such as branches and stones with fabricated objects that range from handmade papers and jute twine to electrical cords and light bulbs. Ms. Lyons’ creative process continues to be driven by the interaction between the aural and visual arts.
